Job Summary

The University of Michigan seeks a dynamic and innovative professor to join our faculty with a joint appointment in the Departments of Mathematics and Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics. This position offers a unique opportunity to bridge these two disciplines through teaching and research.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Develop graduate courses in mathematics and bioinformatics

  • Mentor students at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervising research projects and theses

  • Contribute to curriculum development in both departments

  • Maintain office hours to provide academic support and guidance to students

Research

  • Conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of mathematics and bioinformatics

  • Develop algorithms and mathematical models for analyzing biological data

  • Secure external funding through research grants and contracts

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences

  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines on interdisciplinary research projects

Service

  • Participate in departmental and university committees

  • Contribute to the academic community through peer review and professional organizations

  • Engage in outreach activities to promote mathematics and bioinformatics

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field

  • Strong background in both mathematics and computational biology

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level

  • Proven track record of research and publications in mathematics and bioinformatics

  • Experience in securing research funding

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Skills

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB

  • Expertise in areas such as statistical modeling, machine learning, or data analytics applied to biological systems

  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and databases

  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
