Summary

This position is responsible for performing activities relating to the training of individuals as relates to the practice of pharmacy as a pharmacy technician compounder. This includes ensuring high standards of care, thorough proper didactic and practical applications, as well as comprehensive knowledge- and skill-based training requirements. The Pharmacy Technician Trainers will be responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating educational programming and services required for all levels of pharmacy compounders including pharmacists, technicians, and other learners. This is a full-time position, with approximately 80% of time spent on training and related activities, and approximately 20% of time working supporting the duties and services fulfilled by the Compounding Compliance Team (CCT).

This position will require the employee to report on-site, with minimal remote work as needed.

Responsibilities*

Essential:

Pharmacy Technician Trainer will have attained mastery in multiple roles within the pharmacy including compounding. This individual will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of didactic and practical training of pharmacy compounding personnel, as well as additional tasks and roles, including (but not limited to):

  • Coordination, oversight and implementation of initial compounding training for new employees

  • Conducting routine, ongoing competency assessments of pharmacy compounders through observational evaluation (e.g., performing media fill testing and gloved fingertip sampling).

  • Evaluation of compounding training, responding to feedback, and developing plans to address opportunities for improvement

  • Participating in the daily monitoring of incubated viable samples collected by the CCT

  • Participate in the compounding personnel training, competency assessment, and viable sample incubation records completion, filing, and reporting.

  • Participate in the development, review and maintain training materials, pharmacy standards of care, policies, and procedures in collaboration with the Personnel focused CCT Pharmacist and CCT Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.

  • Work with content experts, CCT Pharmacists and the Education & Professional Development (EPD) Team to provide coordination, oversight, and implementation/delivery of education and training to support:

  • New employee orientation and training and cross training requests

  • New pharmacy programs and services (e.g., clinical services, operational changes)

  • Updates and support of existing pharmacy programs and services

  • Education and training may be delivered by (but not limited to): classes, in-services, formal presentations, continuing education events, and online learnings

  • Provide expertise, oversight, and management of competency assessments in coordination with the CCT Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, including:

  • Assist in management of all aspects of the Learning Management System (LMS) (M-Learning)

  • Review, evaluation and update of existing competencies and learnings

  • Assessing needs for new competency assessments and learning

  • Participate in compliance/reporting from the LMS

  • Conduct audits of staff practices to identify potential needs for education, coaching, and re-training

  • Assessment of pharmacy compounding staff needs for education, skill, and professional development, and developing appropriate training, education, and competency assessment plans to address highest needs, at least annually

  • Provide feedback, as warranted, on each pharmacy compounder trainee to their respective supervisors or trainers, to be included in the development of their training plan or performance evaluations

  • Participating as an active member of internal work groups/committees

  • Maintain cross competence to all essential CCT Pharmacy Technician duties (e.g., viable environmental sample collection, data entry, supply ordering technical administrative tasks) for approximately 20% of time/effort and vacation cross coverage support.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrates ongoing competency in pharmacy technician skills (as applicable) and expectations (refer to Pharmacy Technician Associate (102658) and Intermediate (103641) job descriptions)

  • Promotes positive communications with entire health care team

  • Mentors others via feedback, in-service training, etc.

  • Adapts positively to change and helps to lead change process

  • Promotes learning experiences for staff

  • Participates in and/or leads staff meetings and other work groups for problem identification, solving, and planning

  • Assume responsibility for special project assignments on the CCT (as assigned)

  • Leads process improvements and supports implementation of changes

RELATED DUTIES

Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from the CCT Pharmacy Manager. Functional supervision is received from the CCT Pharmacy Technician Supervisor or and CCT Pharmacists.

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over trainees or student/resident learners.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as a pharmacy technician with compounding duties

  • Current licensure, or eligibility for licensure, that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements set by The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) is necessary. This includes:

  • A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire

  • If the successful candidate has or obtains a temporary pharmacy technician license, s/he must successfully obtain a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires

  • Excellent communication skills, including fluency in writing, reading and speaking English

  • Excellent teaching skills

  • Proficient computer skills and literacy, including Windows-based and Microsoft Office-based programs

  • Proficiency in basic mathematic skills relevant to pharmacy technician responsibilities

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program

  • Experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital setting

  • Experience with training others, especially pharmacy technicians

  • Teaching experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Ability to work in a stationary position for long periods of time

  • Traveling long distances within the health system

  • Ability to communicate/exchange information

  • Fine motor coordination/dexterity necessary for keyboarding, typing and medication compounding

  • Positioning self to enable movement of inventory

  • Pulling, bending and manual dexterity movements

  • Moving of up to 50 pounds

  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions

  • Ability to visualize details at close range in order to perform activities such as transcribing and reading from a screen

Work Schedule

The schedule for this position is primarily day-shift but may require rare weekend and evening shift training or incubation responsibilities.
