Summary This position is located in the Veterinary Medical Unit of the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Performing complex animal husbandry duties in a research environment; Feeding, watering, and caring for a variety of animals; Identifying and reporting signs of illness and abnormality; Administering special diets and maintaining feeding records; Maintaining a daily census of animals; Receiving and housing new animals; Coordinating the work of others; Assisting with surgical anesthesia and animal treatments; Euthanizes animals; Initiating supply and equipment orders; Assisting with surgery as needed; Initiating work orders for equipment that need to be serviced; Participating in equipment system maintenance; Performing test sampling of equipment output on a regular basis; Assisting in monitoring the safety and security of the Veterinary Medical Unit; Performing related duties as required. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-05: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience includes: research activity or control program work; nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. Transcripts required. OR An equivalent combination of specialized experience and education that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Animal Husbandry Attention to Detail Flexibility IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires some physical exertion when walking, bending, lifting (up to 50lbs.), climbing ladders/step stools, and repetitive motion work. In many situation the duration of the activity contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Agility and dexterity is required for proper job execution. The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., handling various species of animals, working around moving parts, and using carts and various machines needed to perform functions in the Veterinary Medical Unit. Employees are required to use protective clothing or gear when working with various animal species, contagious diseases, and irritating chemicals.
