Job Summary

The School of Kinesiology (http://www.kines.umich.edu) andRogel Cancer Center (https://www.rogelcancercenter.org/) at the University of Michigan are engaged in a strategic hiring initiative in the Exercise Oncology area. We recently hired two new tenure-line Exercise Oncology faculty members and are now requesting nominations and applications for an additional tenure-line faculty position in this theme. We are seeking to identify a candidate who could be appointed at the senior level ( Professor or Associate Professor ) or the junior level ( Assistant Professor ).

Candidates for this open faculty position will be expected to maintain a robust research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Kinesiology's Movement Science (https://www.kines.umich.edu/academics/movement-science) or Applied Exercise Science (https://www.kines.umich.edu/academics/applied-exercise-science) programs, and have research expertise appropriate for effectively mentoring trainees at the undergraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan.

The individual hired into this new faculty position will be appointed in the School of Kinesiology. In Winter 2021, the School of Kinesiology moved into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building (Kinesiology Building (https://www.kines.umich.edu/about/kinesiology-building) ), which is located in the heart of the University of Michigan's main campus. The $120,000,000 renovation project expands the School of Kinesiology's research, classroom, and office space to approximately 250,000 sq ft. The research space in this newly renovated building includes approximately 12,000 sq ft of open wet-lab and vivarium space, a 3,000 sq ft clinical testing suite, and a 2,000 sq ft clinical exercise training center. In addition, the new hire will be appointed as a member of the Rogel Cancer Center, providing access to state-of-the-art Cancer Center Shared Resources (https://www.rogelcancercenter.org/research/shared-resources) and the Oncology Clinical Trial Support Unit (https://octsu.med.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan.

Required Qualifications*

We seek candidates passionate about exercise and oncology research with expertise in lifestyle interventions using physical activity/exercise to improve patient outcomes across the cancer care continuum, including cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

The successful candidates must have a doctoral degree, along with an outstanding record of performing exercise oncology research and producing high-quality/high-impact scientific publications. Assistant Professor candidates should demonstrate academic independence with respect to: 1) publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research, 2) mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, 3) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise; 4) demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and 5) having independent research funding or showing outstanding promise for future funding.

At the Professor/Associate Professor rank, candidates should demonstrate a consistent and ongoing record of securing research funding. Additionally, they should possess the necessary experience and skills to provide leadership that will advance the scholarly excellence of the Movement Science and/or Applied Exercise Science Programs in the School of Kinesiology. These requirements are in addition to those expected at the Assistant Professor rank mentioned above.
