NANA Regional Corporation Iñupiaq Language Manager in Anchorage, Alaska

Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President of Shareholder Relations, the Iñupiaq Language and Culture Manager will support the development and implementation of NANA’s Iñupiat Iḷitqusiat strategies. This role provides support to the Regional Elders Council (REC) and the Iñupiaq Language Commission (ILC) and works closely with Elder leaders. Additionally, the manager will facilitate coordination between NANA and its partners to ensure alignment with language and cultural initiatives.

This position can be based at NANA’s Corporate Office in Kotzebue, AK, at NANA’s Anchorage, AK office or remotely in one of the NANA villages in the NANA Region contingent on candidate review and company approval.

Responsibilities

  • Provide staff support for quarterly meetings and coordinates the activities of the Regional Elders Council and the Iñupiaq Language Commission to achieve their vision, mission, and goals.

  • Coordinate with departments to ensure the availability of interpreters and translators available as needed.

  • Collaborate with the Communications department and NANA companies to incorporate Iñupiaq concepts and translations into printed and published materials.

  • Assist senior leaders in arranging Iñupiaq interpreters for events and meetings.

  • Organize and oversee training for interpreters and translators

  • Implement collaborative agreements with local, regional, and other organizations pertaining to Iñupiaq language and culture revitalization.

  • Assist in planning and coordinating region-wide events and conferences related to Iñupiat Iḷitqusiat, language and culture.

  • Develop, maintain, and present reports to NANA senior leaders and partners regarding Iñupiat Iḷitqusiat resources and strategies.

  • Facilitate learning opportunities for NANA and its partners on effective revitalization strategies and programs.

  • Perform other as necessary to support the success of the department or unit.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • 5 years’ experience working in program support, program management, education, learning & development or a related role with at least three years of experience working with Iñupiaq elders, or roles related to Iñupiaq culture and language learning.

  • Proficiency in speaking and writing Iñupiaq preferred.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and organizations.

  • Experience with writing reports and creating presentations.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects and responsibilities.

  • Administrative experience coordinating activities such as travel and conferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff to achieve common goals.

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record to meet NANA’s vehicle insurance policy.

  • Ability to learn new Iñupiaq words and concepts in both business and cultural settings.

  • Openness and acceptance towards Iñupiaq speakers and learners.

  • Strong listening skills and the ability to e address the communication needs of diverse stakeholders, including Elders.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors - environmentally controlled; requires most or all work to be done inside. Some work may occur in outdoor settings.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere.

Description of environment: Office building with standard office environment. At times, outdoor environment.

Physical requirements: Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs.
