Amentum Welder/Fabricator Technician III in Amarillo, Texas

Amentum is seeking a strong Welder/Fabricator to join our building maintenance team in Amarillo, TX !

  • Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm; hours may vary based on business demand.

  • May require availability for after-hour calls as directed by supervisor.

This position is responsible for acting as a subject matter expert in Welding, fabricating steel, PVC, basic carpentry and aluminum structures with occasional exotic materials. Supporting engineering teams with rough modeling fixtures. Ensuring that components are within safety working loads and certifications. Working directly with supervisors, technicians and engineers.

  • Working with blue prints and other documentation

  • Work alongside technicians and engineering teams to offer design improvements

  • Provides instruction, mentors and trains less skilled technicians as needed.

  • Effectively communicates with the site management team and the customer to understand requirements, solve complex design/fitment irregularities, and provide solutions to manufacturing problems

  • Demonstrates ability to identify and correct any safety-related issues and perform independent equipment evaluations to identify potential equipment failures.

  • Performs periodic inspections of fabrication equipment as required.

  • Assist with maintaining mechanical portions of machinery such as pumps, hydraulic/pneumatic, geometrical configurations, etc.

  • Offer assistance in maintaining and troubleshooting fabrication equipment including drill press, shears, welders, industrial saws and systems when needed.

  • Perform preventative maintenance activities on various equipment as directed by supervisor need.

  • This position is also responsible for providing guidance to lower level maintenance staff.

  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the strong organizational/time management skills needed to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Safety leader; be able to speak up and listen up.

  • Effectively prioritize workload in time efficient manner.

  • Provide assistance to maintenance crews in shop as needed.

  • Understand print reading and building from scratch.

  • Offer expertise in metal crafting for engineering projects.

  • Assisting in design of aircraft tooling.

  • Exercising good communication strengths

  • Occasional wood working and carpentry for special projects.

  • Procures parts from crib systems, OEM or authorized vendors.

  • Identifies and documents cost savings.

  • Continuous improvement

  • Determine correct welding positions and configurations

  • Fabricate and build weight bearing structures and components used in rigging from overhead cranes.

  • Utilize metrology equipment such as micrometers, dial calipers, tape measures and angle finders.

  • Find weights per square foot, calculate thicknesses, metal compositions, and drawbacks of materials.

  • Assist in ordering material

  • Offer expertise in areas of material strengths, supports, spans, and engineering techniques.

  • Occasionally interact with vendors and customer to ensure proper sizing, codes and other features are followed.

  • Offer assistance with load testing fixtures and fitments.

  • Utilize fork trucks and other material handling devices to move material.

  • Solve complex angle solutions, and other calculations to ensure products are built as designed.

  • Utilize multiple welding positions with multiple types of welding machinery to include TIG, MIG (GMAW), and Stick ARC (SMAW) welders.

  • Be familiar with electrode, wire and filler sizes and how they are specified and used.

  • Understand feed rates, amperages, voltages and welder settings.

  • Structurally weld metal up to ½” thicknesses and occasionally above.

  • Construct fixtures, cabinets, and open atmosphere vessels made of various stainless materials.

  • Occasional pipe welding and fitting for low to medium pressure ratings

  • Occasional root cause analysis discussions with maintenance crews

  • Work with intricate and delicate materials sensitive to magnets and heat.

  • Squaring up various geometries and components

  • Familiarize with hot work procedures and areas around plant.

  • Understand SDS for chemicals around plant and in shop

  • lockout/tag out procedures and wearing PPE as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or demonstrated equivalent.

  • Six years of welding, machining, fabrication experience or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Structural welding certification or other welding certifications

Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

  • This position may require a valid Driver’s License.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note U.S. Citizen is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

  • This position will require the ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.

  • This position may require various shifts, weekends, and alternative work schedules.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires the ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Requires the ability to regularly climb extension ladders, roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs at least 10 times during shift.

  • Requires the flexibility to bend/stoop, squat repetitive during shift.

  • Requires the ability to regularly kneel repetitive for shift.

  • Requires the ability to move in a 90-degree fashion on a repetitive basis for shift.

  • Requires the ability to stretch/reach on a repetitive basis for shift.

  • Requires the ability to walk extensively throughout the plant during shift.

  • Requires the use of a Company/Client approved utility knife.

  • Requires the ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding.

  • Some tasks will require repetitive wrist movement.

  • Requires the ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of stress.

Special Requirements:

  • Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment so that acceptable levels of performance and overall contribution are maintained.
