ER/Clinical Secretary

Full-time, Day/Evening shift, 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, 11:00 am - 11:00 pm, 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm, every other weekend and every other holiday.

Purpose:

Functions as an Emergency Department team member by working with the nursing staff in direct and indirect nursing care of the patient. This includes but is not limited to clerical duties, computer use, stocking, ordering supplies, cleaning, data collection, patient transportation, and public relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory - Labels print in ER. Assures blood work is completed with labels gone. Transporting specimens. Verify cath vs. clear void specimen. Abnormal results to a physician immediately.

  • Department Orders - Responsible for clerical and clinical supplies ordering and stocking.

  • EKG - places orders, and charges all EKGs. Review all EKGs for the name. If no name, must review all EKGs to ensure and clarify the name.

  • Consultations - notifies consults, documents time notified, monitors return calls for re-notification and documentation.

  • Assists in the orientation of all new Emergency Department staff: nursing, trauma assistants, and secretaries.

  • EMS Room - Responsible for stocking EMS pyxis, linen removal, and dietary needs

  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to increases in patient flow and emergency conditions and sets appropriate priorities.

  • Knowledge of Code Grey Protocol and activation

  • Assist Patient Care when asked with Transporting patients to CT. Assists in and out of bed to bathroom. Assists with food trays and patient/family needs. Assists on/off bedpans. Holding patients for treatments. Answers call bells. Assist with any other request.

  • Places orders through the Ibex documentation system. Answers telephone professionally and appropriately - 3 lines that override

  • EKG - places orders, and charges all EKGs. Review all EKGs for the name. If no name, must review all EKGs to ensure and clarify the name.

  • EMS Radio - Responsible for assuring command sheets are on the chart with the correct name and information. Answers radio when available.

  • Old Chart/Films - Need to ensure records, and films to the floor; if not sent, transport these things to the floor.

  • Radiology - Assures BUN/Creat are drawn or the patient is older than 65 years old that IV contrast may be needed. Call results to CT before the scan. ID allergies when placing orders. Abnormal results to physician

  • Trauma - Responsible for trauma paging system and troubleshooting. Responsible for consulting physicians during traumas. Responsible for triaging patients into Ibex before documentation and orders can be completed. Notify air/ground transportation. Responsible for completing trauma response record

  • Education and Formal Training Required: Must be a graduate of a medical secretarial program, medical assistant program, 2 years active EMS experience as EMT or EMT/P, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience Required: None

  • Specific abilities: 1. Adapt to constant change inherent in healthcare. 2. Maintain good working relationships with the Medical Staff, Administration, and other departmental personnel who are involved in the care of patients. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
