ADP Director Application Development in Alpharetta, Georgia

ADP is hiring a Director, Application Development in our Alpharetta, GA location. This is a hybrid role.

In this role you will lead a software engineering and quality team for our OneTax products and will be responsible for technology strategy, software engineering oversight, code quality, release governance, process improvement, risk mitigation, budget management, platform performance, and hiring. You will be responsible for leading your team of insourced and outsourced talent and interface with product, architects, DevOps, QA, support and other engineering teams to ensure the development of software that provides strategic value for the organization. As an energetic Technical Leader, you'll take ownership of your platform roadmap and help motivate and focus our organization to deliver strong results. Your technical background will enable you to appreciate the implications of key architectural, investment, and prioritization decisions.

To thrive in this role, you'll need to be a cloud-native with a solid understanding of technologies, including APIs, distributed systems design, operational scaling and availability, and application integrations. Java and enterprise Java with open-source tools, Java (preferred language), and AWS are critical . You have experience working full stack with front-end, scripting, and back-end experience. WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Leader:

  • Inspire and coach engineering managers and team members.

Collaboration:

  • You'll work with business leadership and project management to understand priorities and create automation accordingly.

Technical:

  • Strong foundational knowledge of software engineering and familiarity with various technologies including but not limited to Java, Spring, AngularJS, JavaScript etc.

  • Build Software with API first approach.

  • Practical experience in delivering software and services leveraging cloud infrastructure such as AWS.

Communication:

  • Gives feedback (both positive and constructively critical).

  • Communicate clearly and concisely to implement leading/best practices and processes to ensure alignment across the Engineering teams.

Social:

  • Knows how to work in and out of organizational boundaries.

  • Positively work through situations of healthy conflict when they occur.

Ownership:

  • Ensure teams develop software in the right way and continues to improve at the craft. An eagerness to learn will help you keep up with ever-changing technologies and maintain the ability to create the best tools for our clients. You are comfortable and thrive in an autonomous role since that will be essential for your success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and management of managers/Dev leads responsible for engineering and quality teams and providing overall technical direction.

  • Provide professional development and mentorship to managers and team members.

  • Establish software engineering standards and guidelines for software engineering organization.

  • Conceives team structure and constantly seeks opportunities to adjust team structure to maximize agility and efficiency.

  • Champions communications on technology and strategic initiatives.

  • Drive quality through automated testing, release governance and high platform performance.

  • Establish a fun, creative and enjoyable environment balanced with strong collaboration and productivity.

  • Present issues and risks, and their business impact to management in a timely manner with proposed mitigation. Actively seeks and removes impediments to team success regardless of where they originate.

  • Human resource contributions associated with the team, including recruiting, hiring, performance evaluation, and coaching.

  • Monitor and manage budget for software engineering teams.

  • Collaboration across multiple business units and functional departments to develop and deploy solutions that address key business initiatives, supporting new revenue opportunities.

  • Inspire the portfolio to strive for innovation, efficiency, continual learning, and a desire to search for new ideas and technologies.

  • Continuously improves software development productivity, quality, predictability, and team morale.

  • Establish culture and processes to attract and retain the best talent in the software and technology space.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering or related discipline is preferred

  • 12+ years substantial engineering experience with 7+ years leadership experience in a software development organization.

  • Practical experience working in Agile environments and in product-focused technology organizations

  • Experience building distributed engineering teams and working with senior engineering leaders and architects

  • Excellent team building skills with a strong ability to motivate and inspire talented engineers

  • 7+ years of experience in leadership and managerial capacities with cross-disciplinary teams including software engineering, infrastructure, security, automated testing, and build tooling

  • 3+ years of experience with cloud providers

  • Track record of evolving engineering team capabilities with recognized improvements

  • Full-stack software development knowledge - including modern technology stacks, public cloud services, container orchestration and scheduling frameworks, distributed databases, and UI frameworks

  • Maintain hands-on interest in current technology trends
