St. Luke's University Health Network RX Specialist- Star Community Health in Allentown, Pennsylvania

The Rx Specialist will address patient medication refill requests and all associated authorizations using standardized workflows. This position will work with a variety of stakeholders and facilitate communication between, but not limited to, patients, providers, insurance, and pharmacies to ensure closure of the medication request process.

Please note the selected candidate and new hire will be an employee of Star Community Health and not St. Luke’s University Health Network. Star Community Health, affiliated with St. Luke’s University Health Network, is an organization comprised of community-based clinics and sites providing healthcare services to our local populations. New hire(s) will be recruited and hired via St. Luke’s University Health Network but will transition to become a Star Community Health employee following the commencement of new hire onboarding.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Processes incoming phone and electronic patient medication refills requests using electronic health record, patient engagement tools and prescription refill platforms.

  • Engages patients in a polite, prompt, and compassionate manner during all patient interactions.

  • Reviews medical records and specialty-specific prescription refill protocols to support filling of prescription when a refill request flags for review.

  • Utilizes defined escalatory workflows to notify prescribing provider of medication requests that have not met protocol criteria.

  • Facilitates correspondence with patients, providers, insurance companies, and pharmacies as necessary to address refill requests.

  • Initiates and completes prior authorization requests as necessary using standardized workflows and authorization forms and platforms.

  • Documents pertinent information in medical record and may notify patients of overdue visits and/or necessary screenings based on defined protocol.

  • Escalates medication questions or concerns as necessary.

  • Collaboratively partners with other team members to promptly address patient requests and/or concerns that may originate in other settings (e.g., Access Center, practice operations, etc.).

  • Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting for up to 8 hours per day, 3 hours at a time. Consistent use of hands and fingers for typing, telephones, data entry, etc. Occasional twisting and turning. Uses upper extremities to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Stoops, bends, and reaches above shoulder level to retrieve files. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision. Visual monotony when reading reports and reviewing computer screen.

EDUCATION:

High School diploma or GED required. Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program or two years similar experience required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Preferred:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification or Certified Medication Technician

  • Bilingual- Spanish

  • Previous Call Center Experience or Customer Service Role

  • Knowledge of computer systems and programs such as Microsoft Office

  • Epic Experience

Must possess ability to prioritize tasks. Must possess ability to organize workload. Must be flexible and able to adapt. Must be tactful and even-tempered with the ability to follow through on projects with minimal supervision, make independent decisions and use good judgment. Must have excellent organizational skills and productivity to maintain smooth workflow. Must maintain confidentiality of all correspondence, personnel, and operational issues.
