This job posting will be used to fill multiple Civil Engineering student worker positions for the summer of 2025.

Apply Early! Interviews will start in January 2025 and will continue until all positions are filled.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering summer student worker positions available. Students will gain hands-on professional work experience and work on transportation - focused projects. The following positions are available:

Traffic Counts - Moorhead

Assist with traffic volume data collection by setting portable traffic counters and road tubes to obtain count information.

Surveys - Alexandria, Fergus Falls or Detroit Lakes

Assist the field survey crew with locating right of way boundaries, construction staking projects, and operating the GNSS Rover of Total Station to enable accurate collection of field survey data. Assist the right of way/permit area with filing, recording and mailing out permits.

Design - Detroit Lakes

Assist with the preparation of final design plans, gathering necessary information needed to recommend solutions on hydraulics, erosion control, and draining issues for design/construction projects. Assist with permits and ensure all environmental concerns are addressed

Construction – Morris or Detroit Lakes

Assist in the preparation of highway construction plans using a Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and assists inspectors to ensure projects are completed in accordance with MnDOT policy. Assist in inspection of contractor's work and methods so that the construction work meets the requirements of the plans, specifications and special provisions. Perform field testing of construction materials to ensure that tests are performed accurately, timely, thoroughly, and according to specification.

Right of Way/Planning – Detroit Lakes

Assist with district activities relating to planning, scanning, documentation, pre-acquisition/acquisition activities, base maps, and miscellaneous inquiries relating to permits and right of way.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Class D Driver’s License

  • Knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry for engineering positions.

  • Ability to evaluate designs and provide technical knowledge and/or recommend design revisions or changes; ability to interact with customers (both internal and external) and stakeholders.

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled or enrolled to start in the next three months as a full-time student in the Civil Technology Program, Construction Management, Surveying Program or Civil Engineering Program with a GPA of at least 2.0.

  • Candidates with at least two (2) years of post-secondary education in the program area in which they are employed will qualify for the student worker paraprofessional senior classification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates completed at least one year of post-secondary education and currently be enrolled as a full-time student in Civil Technology Program, Construction Management, Surveying Program, or Civil Engineering Program with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Physical Requirements

Some of the jobs are physical in nature and will require a pre-employment physical.

Work elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
