COUNTY OF STANLY Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in ALBEMARLE, North Carolina

Job Description

An employee in this class performs emergency medical procedures at the certified level, performing professional advanced life support work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims, and performing advanced emergency care, including the administration of life-sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while en route to area hospitals. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Employees serve as a member of a response unit and are responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Work requires considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short-term relief. Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including the risk of exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases, thus, the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed in accordance with established EMT and medical procedures and under departmental and local medical director-approved protocols.

Examples of Job Duties

Responds to 911 calls for non-emergency and/or emergency medical assistance and operates emergency vehicles to transport patients.

Provides initial medical assessment by taking vitals and administering basic life support treatment to patients; provides assistance to paramedics engaging in advanced life support treatment and dispenses medication in accordance with established procedures and medical protocols.

Completes forms and incident reports concerning events and activities to ensure all patient medical care is documented.

Maintains a clean base and ambulance.

Ensures the proper functioning of the emergency medical vehicle, all emergency medical equipment, and that adequate supplies of inventory are on the vehicle; reports damage or non-working equipment.

Communicates and coordinates with agencies that provide mutual aid.

Provides outreach education in the community and emergency medical service at community events.

Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.

Adheres to the departments safety rules, regulations and protocols; uses assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by protocol and OSHA guidelines.Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures, protocols, and policies pertaining to emergency services of the County. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation. Thorough knowledge of basic and some advanced emergency medical and life-sustaining techniques including cardiac care, trauma and shock care, ventilation and other CPR techniques. Thorough knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) and best practices during disaster events. Thorough knowledge of infection control and OSHA guidelines. Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Good knowledge of medical terminology. Good knowledge of the County road system and geography. Good knowledge of radio communications and Emergency Medical Dispatch response determinants. Awareness level knowledge of extrication techniques. Skill in driving, including emergency vehicles during emergency situations while applying safe driving practices. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in public and interpersonal relations. Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, resourcefulness, accuracy, thoroughness and the physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position, while maintaining an ethical standard of care. Ability to make assessments of a patients medical condition; ability to administer emergency medical t chniques and use specialized equipment associated with basic life support. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergencies; ability to relate well with others under stressful conditions; and deal with stress, and death and dying patients. Ability to establish and maintain working professional relationships with County staff, physicians, patients and their families, other emergency service agencies and the general public; ability to collaborate with others and work as part as a team. Ability to maintain knowledge and skill in relation to new protocols, emergency medical techniques, Standard Operating Guidelines and new equipment through continuing education and seminars. Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software. Ability to accurately record services provided on required forms. Ability to maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient contact. Ability to lift substantial weight

Qualifications

Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency

Possession of North Carolina EMT-Paramedic certificationORNational Registry EMT paramedic certification to qualify for the legal recognition process is required.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a pre-employment drug testing, background check, and Fitness for Duty assessment. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.

Participation in the County Drug and Alcohol Screening program is required.
