Duties Description Under the direction of an Information Technology Specialist 3, SG-23, within the Chief Technology Office/Enterprise Network Services/Data Center Networks (DCN) Content Filtering group, the Student Assistant, NS, will assist with the monitoring and configuration of the network infrastructure supporting the New York State client networks. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Collect syslog and network monitoring data. • Utilize the following languages and tools for troubleshooting: The browser’s “inspect” function; PowerShell; SharePoint; Webex; Splunk; and Linux. • Utilize network monitoring tools such as perform analysis of network traffic using Wireshark, firewall logs and syslogs; understand data networking protocols including TCP/IP; IPSec; OSI; OSPF; BGP; HTTP; IPSec; JSON; SSL; DNS; TLS; and other LAN/WAN protocols. In addition, responsible for monitoring proxy server services in the data centers and reporting issues to management as appropriate. • Manage and optimize Internet firewall rules for 50 NYS agencies which encompasses 130,000 users. • Troubleshoot network alerts. • Gather information on network and device trends. • Create monitoring and trending reports that management will use for planning and design purposes. • Configure network devices. • Work with the monitoring group to improve network monitoring. Preferred qualifications (not mandatory) would include the following: • Relevant coursework in computer networking or related disciplines. • Has experience with Microsoft Visio and Excel. • Must be available at least 20 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications • Must be a US citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States• Must be 18 years of age or older• Must be currently attending a New York State college, university or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State• Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year’s worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students) OR currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program• Must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent to a C.
