Minimum Qualifications NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NY HELPS):One year of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories; or two years of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential settingORCertification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting.COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):Must be on the Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker Exam list and/or be in a permanent position with lateral or promotional eligibility to the title of Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker
Duties Description Supervises the work of animal care student assistants; schedules and makes work assignments, providing on-the-job training and instructions in the care of animals; assists student assistants in the performance of non-routine/difficult tasks; maintains animal laboratory, including making daily inspections for animal care, feeding and cleanliness; monitors for diseases; washes cages and other equipment; and performs a variety of administrative activities such as maintaining records and supplies inventories, placing orders and receiving shipments; and assists in veterinary care activities.
