Join Our Mission

As a Recreation Supervisor at Secure Detention, you will be responsible for implementing and facilitating recreational programs and activities. The Recreation Specialist will implement and facilitate the recreation program but not limited to sports, leisure, cultural, and therapeutic based activities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises and teaches youth and acts as a role model and always be aware and account for youth

  • Develops recreational activities that are aligned with agency’s trauma informed philosophy

  • Follows oversight agencies’ regulations and guidelines

  • Facilitates a variety of recreational programs and workforce development activities

  • Supervises the facility recreation department.

  • Performs regular staff supervision.

  • Constantly seeks process improvements and remains current with best recreational practices.

  • Ensures department has and maintains appropriate equipment and order other equipment will be needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to form engaged and therapeutic relationships with children and families.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to build relationships and rapidly engage youth and families.

  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, prioritize and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of internal and external organizational policies and practices including completing all state mandated and agency reports in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with extreme discretion.

  • Good working knowledge and understanding of basic human behavioral traits.

  • Capability to cope with physical threats and emotional stress.

  • Capacity to apply discipline in accordance with accepted policy in a firm, fair, consistent fashion.

  • Aptitude to organize, lead, and/or assist in activities such as sports, arts and crafts and/or remedial education.

  • Ability to observe, guide and correct as necessary, delinquent, unsafe, and/or unusual behavior or resident juveniles.

  • Capability to restrain youths who are out of control in accordance with accepted policy and procedures.

  • Ability to work independently or as a team member.

  • Ability to handle decision-making under pressure, particularly when faced with tight deadlines.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for analyzing data and developing strategic solutions.

  • Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, including attention to detail and training skills

  • Ability to work with a culturally and economically diverse population

  • Demonstrated ability to create adventure-based recreational programs and ability to manage and operate various recreational facilities and equipment

  • Knowledge of emergency procedures.

  • Demonstrated understanding of programming for youth with substance abuse and/or mental health challenges

  • Demonstrated organizational skills including time management and ability to facilitate a variety of recreational programs and workforce development activities.

    Job Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required.

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working in a similar field.

  • Experience working with at risk youth and/or non-profit experience preferred.

  • Must become and maintain TCI, First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard, ABC and NYPUM certification.

  • Current and valid driver's license required as per Agency guidelines; travel is required.

    Salary Range:

  • $55,000 to $65,000 per year. This range is dependent on experience, education, and skills. This is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is working in an office or school setting and may be exposed to items such as office equipment, low to moderate noise levels, dust, and other items found in a school environment. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee needs to be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear. Dexterity to write and operate standard office machines such as computer printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators is required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. May require restraining youth.

  • The mental demands include acting as a positive role model, managing emotions, demonstrating tolerance and empathy, understanding that changing behaviors and habits require repetition and practice, and demonstrating patience and flexibility.
