The New York State Youth Justice Institute (hereafter the Institute) is seeking to hire a Project Manager. The Institute is a collaborative initiative between the University at Albany and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Service. Housed at the University, the Institute's purpose is to ensure that at-risk youth in New York receive the best and most effective services. Key responsibilities of the Institute include the following activities:

  • Evaluation of youth justice initiatives within New York State;

  • Accumulation and dissemination of information on national evidence-based and evidence-informed practices;

  • Grant writing and administration to support the Institute's growth and impact; and

  • Providing technical assistance and trainings to youth justice practitioners to enhance the outcomes for youth, families and overall public safety throughout New York State.

This is a full-time position beginning summer 2024 or later at the NYS Youth Justice Institute. The Project Manager's portfolio will include research, operations, and training support for all activities within the NYS Youth Justice Institute's approved workplans. Workplans are submitted and approved twice annually and lay out the Institute's research, technical assistance and training, and youth engagement activities for the year.

Position summary:

Due to the three-pronged nature of the portfolio described above, the Project Manager will report directly to the NYS YJI's Executive Director, with a dotted line reporting structure to the Director of Research and the Director of Finance and Grants.

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning, organizing, and conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research and evaluation to inform programmatic decisions;

  • Designing, testing, and evaluating methods and protocol for research projects;

  • Analyzing, summarizing, and organizing collected data;

  • Translating scientific findings to general audience;

  • Coordinating and managing multiple research projects;

  • Participating in meetings with State and local-level partners and stakeholders;

  • Assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students;

  • Implementation and management of operational systems within the Institute that improve efficiency and helps meet contractual obligations; and

  • Support of various recurring and ad hoc trainings for traditional and non-traditional audiences such as monthly research webinars, annual thematic forums, etc;

The Project Manager is expected to attend meetings with the Institute's myriad stakeholders and may on occasion represent the NYS YJI's Executive Director at such meetings. Travel is anticipated but should not exceed 25%.

Job Requirements:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in criminal justice, Social Welfare, Sociology, Public Policy, or a related field, plus 5 years of professional experience.

  • Knowledge of youth justice system broadly, and in New York State in particular.

  • Substantive knowledge of best practice literature, evidence-based programming, and implementation science.

  • Experience utilizing quantitative methods.

  • Experience organizing and supporting the development of virtual trainings for traditional and non-traditional audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other researchers, Technical Assistance and Training staff, and individuals with lived expertise in criminal legal processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to multiple assignments and priorities supporting multiple projects and activities.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, oral and written communication skills, and advanced interpersonal and relationship building skills working in a team environment and independently.

  • Experience working with web-based survey tools (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey), virtual conference applications (e.g., Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams), and data analysis and/or visualization software (e.g., Stata, Tableau, Flourish).

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in criminal justice, Social Welfare, Sociology, Public Policy, or a related field.

  • Experience working in partnership with State agencies and local stakeholders.

  • Experience producing reports that are responsive to federal, state, and local funding requirements.

  • Experience participating in recruitment strategies of students and professionals.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify existing administrative and other secondary data related to youth wellbeing.

  • Experience working with stakeholders who may not have research training in developing processes for data collection/reporting.

  • Knowledge of critical factors and theories related to youth justice.

  • Experience conducting evaluation research, particularly in New York State.

  • Strong commitment to social justice and demonstrated research record focuses on equity in the areas of race, gender, and/or SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression).

  • Project management experience.

  • Experience working in government and/or academia is preferred.

  • One-year commitment required with possible option to continue contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Research Associate, R2, $75,000-$78,000
