Why does the job exist? Working on the mountainside above Alamogordo, the Curator Supervisor serves as Curator for the NMMSH in charge of collections, archives, and exhibits. Oversees all aspects associated with acquiring, maintaining, storing, documenting, and displaying the artifacts and archives of the museum. Also oversees the accreditation process for the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and the requirements for the Smithsonian Institution Affiliates Program.

COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT: 1) Provide the Division with artifacts reflective of its collection mission through acquisition and/or loans in compliance with AAM guidelines. 2) Provide the Division with secure physical control of its collection.

REGISTRATION: 1) Provide the Division with intellectual control of its collection in compliance with AAM guidelines. 2) Establish and/or oversee the establishment of additional funding aids for the Museum's archival and library materials.

CURATION and EXHIBITIONS: 1) Provide the Division with information and expertise on the historical and societal relevance of its collection in compliance with AAM guidelines. 2) Provide the Division with information and expertise on the physical composition of collection objects. 3) Provide concepts, designs (as appropriate), and scripting for temporary and permanent exhibits created by the museum and/or outside agencies for display in the museum.

SUPERVISE THE DEPARTMENT: 1) Provide effective supervision, training, and evaluation for assigned personnel. 2) Oversee the department's expenditures, grant funding, and revenue activities.

How does it get done? Reporting directly to the Direct r, the Curator Supervisor directs the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of collections, including negotiating and authorizing the purchase, sale, exchange, or loan of collections. The position is also responsible for authenticating, evaluating, and categorizing the objects in a collection; overseeing and helping to conduct the institution's research projects; and assisting with related educational programs. This position will involve fundraising and promotion, which may include the writing and reviewing of grant proposals, journal articles, and publicity materials, as well as attendance at meetings, conventions, and civic events. The Curator Supervisor will usually handle objects with cultural and historical significance to the international history of space exploration, both human and robotic. This position also works closely with the Division Director on writing and designing of exhibit materials and other duties may be assigned as needed.

Residents from across New Mexico, Museum visitors from all over the world, internal Museum staff, the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, and NMMSH managers are primary beneficiaries of work done by this position. Primary external customers include the visiting public, loaning institutions, institutions to which we have loaned items, and organizations or individuals with whom the NMDCA has partnerships.

Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Museum Studies, Museology, American Studies, History, or Curatorial Studies; four (4) years of experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum and working with historical concepts; and has an aptitude for curatorial administration/operations and personnel management. This candidate is a confident communicator and presenter with strong writing, editing, proofreading (AP style), layout and design, and professional printing/publishing skills. The ideal candidate has a wide degree of creativity, a strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in exhibit development, curatorial care, and digital tracking systems for collections management; excellent project and time management skills with the ability to work with multiple and diverse groups of clients; and a passion for excellence in public service.

Minimum Qualification: Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and four (4) years of experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts.
