Off-Shift Sterile Processing Supervisor

As an Off-Shift Sterile Processing Supervisor, you will function as a liaison between the sterile processing department, pack room, operating room and house departments. Off-Shift Sterile Processing Supervisors are responsible for Akron General's Sterile Processing Technicians and provide relief and on-call management coverage.

A caregiver in this position works 2:30PM - 11:00PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Supervise the work activities of the Sterile Processing Department during off-shifts. You will be assigned to a specific off-shift but will be expected to cover PTO and cover different off-shifts as needed.

  • Interview, hire, orient and train caregivers.

  • Evaluate performance, provide feedback and make personnel action recommendations (promotions, transfers, disciplinary, discharge, etc.).

  • Complete staffing schedules and assignments daily and adjust according to workload and caregiver availability.

  • Oversee loaned trays to ensure that they have arrived and go to decontamination for cleaning.

  • Ensure proper inspection, packaging and sterilization for clean/sterile and on time delivery to meet surgery needs.

  • Perform rounds of all work areas, monitor caregivers to ensure that work assignments are being completed and serve as a resource person for questions and educational needs.

  • Ensure timely and accurate instrument and case cart assembly, flow, and documentation.

  • Function as a liaison between Sterile Processing and Operating Room.

  • Conduct daily rounds of the Operating Room suites.

  • Ensure timely and accurate sterilization and distribution of supplies and equipment to the Operating Room and departments.

  • Ensure interception of items needed for later cases.

  • Ensure caregiver compliance to missing instrument procedures during tray assembly.

  • Provide off-shift leadership for CS-iQ (Instrument Tracking System and Workflow management).

  • Provide input into operational and capital budget preparation, coordinate capital equipment repairs and service contracts, and make equipment purchase recommendations.

  • Supervise emergency carts for appropriateness of supplies and adequate stock levels.

  • Supervise the handling of clean returns and restocking of sterile supplies in the pack room and Sterile Processing departments.

  • Maintain and monitor documentation logs.

  • Ensure appropriate housekeeping department schedules and cleaning compliance for assigned areas.

  • Supervise daily and monthly departmental cleaning of the SPD pack room.

  • Ensure compliance with departmental SOP'S, assist with SOP formation and revision, and monitor OSHA and JCAHO compliance.

  • Coordinate the loaning and acquisition of equipment for operating room areas of responsibility.

  • Complete mandatory education and training to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management OR Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution.

  • Three years of sterile processing experience.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Pursuing or have obtain a bachelor's degree.

  • International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management certification as a Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL).

  • Previous management experience in a supervisory role.

  • Membership in a central service organization.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping, and reaching for prolonged periods of time. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing 25 pounds on a continual basis; ability to push, pull, and navigate carts weighing up to 100 pounds.

  • Possible exposure to biological and chemical contamination.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform basic functions of position day to day instrument counting, sorting and assembly. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

  • Must be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to utilize color-coded systems used for instrument identification. All applicants will be required to be prescreened for color blindness by our Occupational Health Department.
