Assistant Project Manager at Brooks Construction

Job Summary:

The Assistant Project Manager is responsible for assisting the Project Management staff in managing, coordinating, supervising construction activities on assigned jobs, and carrying out day-to-day administrative and field work. Serving as the linchpin for a project's profitable completion, he/she is responsible for assisting other Project Managers in coordinating and facilitating needed resources to ensure a high-quality job is completed in a cost efficient manner. Individual will manage and interact with customers (e.g., general contractor, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), City of Fort Wayne, owner, etc.), sub-contractor(s), vendors, and/or internal resources with guidance from other Project Managers. Individual works closely with other Project Managers to assist in scheduling assigned projects and with estimator/sales to ensure financial success of projects. Some responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, reviewing work plans, scheduling, quality control, subcontractor management, analyzing drawings, soliciting subcontractor/vendor quotes, and preparing time, cost and labor estimates.

Essential Job Functions (*=Non-essential tasks):

  • Assist with required inspections, such as:

  • Traffic control devices

  • Stormwater / Erosion control

  • Confirm quantities on projects by visiting sites and measuring items of work

  • Become proficient through training from other PM's / classes on software, such as:

  • MS Outlook

  • MS Word

  • MS Excel

  • Accounting Software

  • Bluebeam

  • Internal Dashboard

  • Assist PM's with verifying sites are ready for our work

  • Assist PM's with checking grade of work by others prior to our work

  • Assist with pre-construction activities, such as:

  • Field office setup

  • Bulletin board creation and setup

  • Borrow / disposal site submittals

  • Quality Control Plans

  • Assist sales department in creating quantity takeoffs for quotes for smaller projects

  • Begin to review contracts, specifications, drawings to gain familiarity of said documents

  • Assist with meeting foremen on sites under the guidance of other PM's

  • Vacation coverage as assigned

    • Assist others in department as needed

    • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience at a construction company or successful completion of a construction internship program

  • Previous hands-on construction experience in horizontal/civil construction is highly preferred

    Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required

    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job may be considered. Skills and Abilities:

  • Willingness to observe and learn applications of road construction techniques with the ability to study and learn how to read specifications and contracts

  • Demonstrated ability to learn how to read and understand blueprints

  • Demonstrated strong decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to job sites

  • Demonstrated ability to work with other Project Managers' oversight and direction

  • Flexibility in managing multiple priorities within tight time constraints

    Working Environment:

  • Individual will be working in an office and field environment (50/50)

  • Ability to work in adverse conditions, including rain, snow, extreme heat or cold, water, mud, dust, etc.

  • Individual will be working with internal customers (Project Managers, Foremen, Field Superintendents, Sales Estimators, Safety, Accounting, etc.)

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assist with managing multiple crews at any given time (Brooks or Subcontractors)
